Why we get trapped with complex projects

In the CIO magazine the enterpreneur Wolfgang Rathert describes in an impressive way why control is an illusion. Project management is a highly developed and professional discipline.

Still, most projects finish late, turn out to be more expensive than budgeted or have less functionality than planned. Almost one fourth is abandoned early and without success. The reason for this is the complexity, meaning the high level of integration of the linked elements that are at the same time highly dynamic within themselves. This leads to a series of fascinating properties.

Wolfgang describes this and shows why conventional project management fails for complex problems.

The solution lies in self-organisation: Instead of further centralised planning and control top down, responsibilities should be delegated.

We are pleased to see that Wolfgang Rathert also mentions our Management 3.0 trainings as an example, in which project managers learn self-organisation.
