When the team is able, but the system hinders

An enterprise that wants to be more agile in all business sectors often asks itself, where it is currently standing. Agile Organisation Assessment answers this question by scoring the state of the agile transformation from 1 to 5.

We worked with an affiliate company of an internationally active Swiss enterprise with more than 400 employees and asked 20 individuals from all levels several questions, like for example «What is the most important in your organisation: The tasks of a department where the manager rates the performance and decides about salary and bonus or the tasks in a project in which several departments are involved?

We obtained 301 observations with these questions (see chart).

The most impressive was one team, that was amending customer records and were autonomously organised without the knowledge of the management. As a result they produced above average achievements.

We were able to attribute about half (144) of these observations to the management system. The agreement on objectives for instance prevented optimal cooperation. This result dumbfound the management and they reacted within days: They replaced individual goals with team goals for 2014. At the same time they also set targets for the agile transformation of the enterprise. We verify how close these targets are reached by the end of 2014 in a second Agile Organisation Assessment.
